November 27, 2015

Hello Friends of the animals,

HDiC and our volunteers were recognized by the Cuenca Municipality at a ceremony on November 27, 2015.

We do not only work at  our sponsored clinics but all the Municipality sponsored clinics, as well. All who helped at these clinics were recognized with a “Certificado” from the municipality of Cuenca.

This is a very kind gesture to let us know that our efforts are appreciated.

imageOn November 21 and 22 we sponsored a spay and neuter clinic for the people in Jadan.

This is outside of the Cuenca Municipality so we decided to help this community with their dog overpopulation.

We successfully helped 105 animals and their families.  Of course, there are always a few “interested” dogs that hang around to see what is happening plus a few we are able to catch. Love “fixing” these nosy doggies.

October 9 and 10 we went to Azogues

image

This past weekend 20 volunteers headed for Azogues. We all met at 7:15 to car pool out there. We had two long days but left with 120 dogs and cats fixed. These clinics make a huge difference in reducing the unwanted litters of dogs and cats. We must keep these going! The shelters cannot accommodate any more abandoned animals. Each clinic requires donations of $2500-$3000 to do this many animals. Without your support we cannot do this!

September 12 and 13 … 142 surgeries

Wow, the past 2 weekends we performed 215 spay and neuter surgeries. We have really moved forward since our humble beginnings several years ago. We now have 4 vets plus 16 support volunteers who help to make these clinics a huge success – we want to make sure the animals get the best care we can give them while they are with us. This past Saturday and Sunday we were in El Valle/Gualalcay where 142 surgeries were performed. Next weekend we are going to have another clinic where 140 surgeries are already scheduled.

September 5 Molleturo clinic 73 surgeries

image

What were you doing on September 5th?
Here is what Happy Dogs in Cuenca was doing…
We got up bright and early to meet for our trip to Molleturo. Molleturo is located about 75km outside of Cuenca in the Andes. The bus arrived to pick us up at 6AM to take us on our 1 3/4 hour ride through the Cajas. The dogs and cats were waiting for us to start our day at 8AM. We were able to help improve the lives of 73 dogs/cats and save the lives of many unwanted litters. All of us felt great but tired when we arrived home around 9:00PM…..73 surgeries were performed with 20 volunteers.😊

What’s happening……

In the beginning the dogs were picked up to be taken to the clinic for surgery.  This worked for a while but soon became too difficult.  The solution was to take the clinics to the people.  We are always welcomed and never have enough time to accommodate all the people wishing to get their animals fixed.

How can you help? With donations-sure – but see how these people helped ….

One of our volunteers recently organized a vehicle and brought street dogs to the clinic to be fixed. At the same time a high school student was collecting money to fix the 5 dogs living on campus.  She contacted me and we set up appointments to have them all fixed and she used her collected money for the necessary shots. This young lady made all the arrangements to get the dogs to the clinic for their appointments.

The effort of these two people allowed 13 animals to be helped to live Better lives PLUS save dozens of unwanted litters.

Thanks so much for taking the time and making the effort to help……one snip and clip at a time.

Fiera Libre Spay and Neuter Clinic July 11&12…120 Surgeries!

imageIn July the clinic was located in the middle of the Fiera Libre market.  It was raining but that did not stop the people from keeping their appointments.

There were 117 surgeries scheduled for the weekend.

We usually have some curious, stray dogs come to check out what we are doing.

This time we had 3 that apparently didn’t just want to look but to participate…..so, we fixed them and let them spend the night.  In the morning we fed them and released them to go “home”.  They were so sweet and we all wished we could take them with us. We can’t take them but the fact that they won’t breed makes us happy enough.

Thank you Roger and Ricardo!

Roger and Ricardo of Paladar Restaurante wanted to help improve the lives of dogs and cats in Cuenca. They decided to have a benefit dinner to raise funds for Happy Dogs in Cuenca last Friday evening, 72 people enjoyed a 3 course meal while being entertained by Umberto Ballone. It was a wonderful evening for people to mingle with old and new friends while helping to “stop the littering.” Thanks to all the folks that attended- we raised $2000 to help our furry friends. Muchas gracias to all
